Working from home injuries covered under WorkCover

if you are working from home, employers have an obligation to provide you with a safe place of work. Employers can help prevent employees from getting injured while working from home and mobile-working environments. When you work from home, you should maintain communication with your employer to ensure you are aware of any safety issues that relate to your work environment. If the employer is not aware of what issues you are facing, while working from home, they will not be able to assist you. There are multiple ways to stay connected with your employer while working from home and prioritize a positive culture of workplace safety.

Workers compensation for injuries that happen at home

If you were injured while carrying out duties of your employment or while performing any activity that is incidental to your employment, you will be eligible for workers’ compensation. If you have your employer’s permission or due to Covid restrictions, to work from home, you should be covered for workers’ compensation if you sustain an injury at home.

Your employer has an obligation to provide you with a safe workplace. Of course, they can’t control your home environment in the same way they manage their own premises, but they still have a responsibility to ensure your safety.

Employers need to take into account safety of the employee while they work from home. The employer cannot turn a blind eye to safety just because the work is undertaken outside the office. If this is overlooked, it may cause serious injuries to employees who are working from home.

Employers can assist in:

  • Assisting with desk set ups at home
  • Advising or providing employees with work from equipment such as:
    • Desks
    • Ergonomic chair
    • Sit to stand equipment
    • Ergonomic keyboard and mouse
    • Job specific equipment

As an employee, you are also responsible for your own safety at work or at home. You also need to take reasonable care. If you have doubts about the safety of your work environment at home, you should raise these concerns with your employer.
