The final phase of the Perfect Consultation is the plan. You can consider the plan as a summary of the whole consultation process.
When a patient first comes to your for treatment, they want to know three things:
1. What is wrong with me?
2. Can you help me?
3. How long will it take?
1. What is wrong with me? By going through the pre interview, interview and the physical exam you should have been able to give an accurate diagnosis to the patient and answer their question.
2. Can you help me? At each stage, the therapist should explain the findings and educate their patient as to what those findings mean. And by doing so, answer their question.
3. How long will it take? This is a not a simple question to answer, but the patient is asking for some assurity that their symptoms are going to improve. The healing phase is influenced by multiple factors. Age of the patient, medical history and also the type of injury.
If it is a simple issue: It can take 2-4 sessions over a period of 2 weeks
More complex issues can take: 4-6 sessions over a period of 2-4 weeks
And if it is a chronic issue, it can 10-15 sessions over a period of few months It is important to emphasise to your patients, after every few sessions, the condition is re evaluated to see what progress is being made.
