Conservative PostFracture Rehabilitation
Patient Presentation:
Here we have a 35 year old male who sustained a non displaced distal Femoral condyle fracture. He was managed conservatively with non weight bearing for 6-8 weeks and a splint to limit knee range of motion. Physiotherapy normally starts once the patient has been cleared by the Orthopaedic specialist and the fracture has stabilised.
Initial phase of treatment: Can take 4-6 weeks. Increase knee range of movement
Mid phase of treatment: Can take 6-12 weeks. Start taking full body weight
Later phase of treatment: 12 weeks+ Increased resistance with weights, balance training, return to sports
Marked swelling and muscle atrophy noted on left knee.
Initial treatment focused on soft tissue release to reduce muscle tightness, swelling and increasing knee range of movement
Later phase of treatment: Full weight bearing exercises
Increased loading:
Results:
We are only in the early stages of rehab, but after 4-6 weeks of treatment, home exercises, clinic based exercises with weights, muscle bulk in the calf and quadriceps is starting to come back.
